Cookie Policy
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar technologies GigVia uses, why we use them, and how you — as a buyer, a seller, or simply someone browsing the Platform — can control them. It works alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers personal data more broadly.
Introduction & Scope
Like most online marketplaces, GigVia uses cookies and a handful of similar technologies to keep the Platform working, to remember your preferences, and to understand how gigs, categories, and features are actually used. This policy expands on the short summary already given in our Privacy Policy, and explains things in more detail: what these technologies are, the specific categories we use, and exactly how to control them.
This Cookie Policy applies to gigvia.com, our mobile applications, and any related services we refer to as the "Platform." It applies whether you're a registered buyer, a registered seller, or simply visiting the Platform before creating an account. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, which govern personal data and platform use more broadly.
What Are Cookies & Similar Technologies?
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device when you visit a website. It lets that website remember information about your visit, such as your login state or preferences, the next time you return or as you move between pages.
- Session cookies are temporary and are deleted automatically when you close your browser.
- Persistent cookies remain on your device for a set period, or until you delete them, so the Platform can recognize you on a future visit.
- We also use technologies that work similarly to cookies, including local storage, pixels, and software development kits ("SDKs") inside our mobile apps. For simplicity, this policy refers to all of these collectively as "cookies."
Why GigVia Uses Cookies
We rely on cookies for a few clear, practical purposes, and never as a way to collect more than the Platform genuinely needs:
- Keeping you signed in as you move between browsing gigs, your dashboard, and messages, so you don't have to log in on every page.
- Securing the Platform, including protecting the escrow and checkout process, and detecting suspicious or fraudulent activity.
- Remembering your preferences, such as your theme, currency, language, and notification settings, so you don't need to reset them every visit.
- Understanding usage at an aggregate level, such as which gig categories are most active, so we can fix issues and improve the Platform over time.
- With your consent, measuring how effective the channels that brought you to GigVia are.
Types of Cookies We Use
We group the cookies used on GigVia into four categories. The table below shows what each one does, how long it typically lasts, and whether you're able to turn it off.
| Category | Purpose | Typical duration | Can you disable it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Keeps you signed in, secures checkout and escrow, and helps prevent fraud. | Session, up to 12 months | No — required for the Platform to work |
| Functional / Preference | Remembers your language, currency, theme, and notification settings. | Up to 12 months | Yes |
| Analytics / Performance | Measures how gigs, categories, and pages are used so we can improve them. | Up to 24 months | Yes |
| Marketing / Advertising | Measures the effectiveness of channels that brought you to GigVia. Off by default. | Up to 12 months | Yes |
Essential cookies are set automatically because the Platform can't function securely without them. Every other category is optional and only activates with your consent, which you can give or withdraw at any time through your cookie preferences.
First-Party & Third-Party Cookies
Some cookies on GigVia are set by us directly ("first-party"), while others are set by trusted providers who help us run parts of the Platform ("third-party"):
- First-party cookies are set by GigVia itself and are used for the core functions described in this policy, such as keeping you signed in or remembering your preferences.
- Our payment processor may set cookies during checkout or withdrawal to securely process a transaction and prevent fraud.
- Our identity verification provider may set cookies during a verification step to confirm the authenticity of a submitted document.
- Analytics and error-monitoring providers may set cookies that help us understand usage patterns and detect technical problems across the Platform.
Cookies for Buyers & Sellers
Most cookies on GigVia work the same way no matter which side of a gig you're on — keeping you signed in, remembering your preferences, and securing your session as you browse, message, and manage your account. A few are more specific to what you're doing at that moment:
When you're funding or managing a gig
- Checkout cookies, often set by our payment processor, secure the escrow funding step when you post and pay for a gig.
- Dashboard preference cookies remember how you like to view and sort your active gigs and submissions awaiting review.
When you're claiming or getting paid for a gig
- Verification-flow cookies, often set by our identity verification provider, support the document check some gig categories or a first withdrawal require.
- Withdrawal cookies help securely process a payout request to your connected payment method.
Managing Your Preferences on GigVia
The simplest way to control cookies on GigVia is through our own preference center, available at any time:
- When you first visit GigVia, you're shown a cookie banner where you can accept all optional categories, reject them, or open the preference center to choose individually.
- You can revisit and change these choices at any time from your account settings, or through the cookie preferences link available on the Platform.
- Essential cookies can't be toggled off here, since the Platform depends on them to keep your session secure.
- Changes to your preferences take effect for future activity; they don't retroactively remove data already collected before the change was made.
Browser Controls & Do Not Track Signals
Beyond GigVia's own preference center, most browsers let you manage cookies at the device level:
- You can usually view, delete, or block cookies through your browser's settings menu, generally found under "Privacy" or "Site settings."
- Many browsers let you block third-party cookies specifically while still allowing first-party ones, which keeps most of GigVia working normally.
- Some browsers include a "Do Not Track" signal. There's currently no common industry standard for how sites should respond to it, so GigVia does not change its behavior based on this signal alone.
- Where a jurisdiction legally requires us to honor a specific browser-based opt-out signal, such as Global Privacy Control, we do so for the optional cookie categories it covers.
Cookies in Our Mobile Apps
Traditional browser cookies don't apply inside a mobile app the same way. Instead, our apps may use comparable technologies, such as device identifiers and SDKs, for the same essential, functional, and analytics purposes described above.
- You can manage app-level tracking permissions through your device's own operating system settings, such as the app permission or privacy settings on iOS and Android.
- Push notification preferences, a related but separate setting, can be managed directly within the GigVia app or through your device's notification settings.
What Happens If You Disable Cookies
You're always free to disable optional cookies, and doing so doesn't affect your right to use GigVia. It's worth knowing what to expect, though:
- Disabling functional cookies means preferences like theme, language, or currency won't be remembered between visits.
- Disabling analytics cookies has no effect on your own experience of the Platform; it simply means your activity isn't included in the aggregate data we use to improve it.
- Disabling marketing cookies means we won't measure how effective the channel that brought you to GigVia was; it doesn't otherwise change your experience.
Cookies & Your Broader Privacy Rights
Information collected through cookies is personal data whenever it can be linked to you, and is handled in line with our Privacy Policy. That means the same rights described there, including access, correction, deletion, and objection, apply to cookie data as well. This Cookie Policy explains the mechanics of the technology itself; our Privacy Policy explains the full picture of how that data is used, shared, and protected, and how to exercise those rights.
Changes to This Cookie Policy & Contact
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect new features, new providers, or legal requirements. Material changes are announced by email or in-platform notice with reasonable notice before they take effect, and where required, we'll ask for your consent again for any new optional category introduced.
If you have a question about the cookies used on GigVia, or need help adjusting your preferences, GigVia Support is always the right place to ask.
